The children and teachers in Cat’s did something for the coming of Earth Day last Friday, all the electronics were turned off for ten minutes each break time. Some classes were fortunate to have spare time to discuss more about how to save the Earth. A teacher shared a song called “My Brother the Whale”. The lyrics say that the animals and plants are our siblings and what happens to them is what happens to us. If you agree with this just like we do and wonder how you can help your children get to know their animals and plants better, take a walk to the library and meet Eric Carle!
Eric Carle was born in New York in 1929. While he was in kindergarten, his teacher invited his mom to school and advised her to support his artistic and creative talent. This is something that Eric Carle always remembers and the reason why he is devoted to creating children’s literature.
His most famous book is “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” This book has been translated into 47 different languages. He has written and illustrated over 70 children’s books and most of them are about animals and plants.
Eric’s art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. He likes to cut and layer hand-printed papers to form bright and colorful images. Moreover, many of his books have an added dimension, like the stars in The Very Lonely Firefly. These are the reasons why his books are extremely popular among children, not to mention how simple but insightful his stories are. You can easily feel the warmth in his wording when he features the main character, which is almost always an animal. In fact, the themes of his stories are usually drawn from his extensive knowledge and love of nature and it is an interest shared by most children.
Erichopes to make his books entertaining and meaningful. He meant to offer an opportunity to his readers so they can learn something about the world around them, about Earth. In addition, his writing naturally brings outchildren’s feelings for the environment, inquisitiveness and infinitive creativity.
Eric and his wife founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, which is the first museum about children’s books in the United States. Just like you and I, he cares about children, animals, plants and the Earth. Do not hesitate and take a trip to the library with you children and enjoy the colorful and meaningful world Eric Carle creates for us!
